PLASMA AND PARTICLE PHYSICS POWER SUPPLIES
Power Systems International supplies a wide range of high stability DC and AC power supplies for applications in the scientific laboratories used for plasma physics, particle accelerator, nuclear, and space research projects.

These specialised power supplies are also supplied for critical duty industrial process applications and they can be manufactured as single units, or in modules that can be assembled to form a fully integrated complete system when we are involved in important turn-key major projects.

Power Systems International has a vast experience in power conversion semiconductor switching technology used for producing AC to DC rectification systems and DC to AC high frequency and low frequency PWM inverters for critical duty application.

Product types

Transformer Rectifier
Transformer rectifier systems using input isolation transformers connected to fully controlled 6pulse, 12 pulse and 24 pulse thyristor switching bridges. The output stage is provided with a passive output filter as standard and a supplementary active filter is added so the ripple level in the DC can be reduced to 1 x 10-4 depending on the accuracy of the current and voltage regulation required by the application.

This product range is a cost effective means of providing power supplies of more than 1,000kW for large magnets where high accuracy of current control of up to 1 p.p.m for 8 hours is required.
The output from the rectifier can be soft started to ramp up from 0 to 100% over a pre determined time to suit the energy required by the magnet.

High frequency switch mode
This type of power supply is based on a modular concept and can be used with an integral isolation transformer input or can be directly connected to the input mains source where the size and load capacity permits.
The second modular stage rectifies the input AC to DC, this is then connected to the high frequency switching inverter module which incorporates a galvanically isolated transformer inserted in the intermediate stage. The output stage consists of output transformers with their secondary windings arranged for voltage matching and connected to the load through a rectifier stage and interconnecting busbars.

The modular power supply system is built from pre engineered subassemblies that are combined to produce a multi stage power module and can be installed as a single unit or combined with similar multi stage power modules to supply magnets in excess of 20,000Amps at, for example, a voltage of 18.5 V DC with very accurate current regulation and stepless adjustment from 0 to 100% output.

The high frequency power supply system is designed for use with magnet loads that require DC with a very low ripple content with a 100 p.p.m current controlled power source and where the connected load requires an instantaneous response the reference control signal.

This type of power supply system is fitted with a sophisticated microprocessor control system for the command, protection and operating logic and for the monitoring and diagnostic facilities interface with the laboratory computers.
The logic used in the high frequency power systems enables us to configure the system operating elements of the power sub assemblies to deliver a pulsed power output or we can also configure the power sub assemblies to produce a bi-polar output for other types of magnet loads.
